He was a ball turret gunner aboard various Boeing B 17 Flying Fortresses and flew dozens of successful missions earning him the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. On June 25th, 1944 as part of 2nd Lt. Kenneth L. Houghton crew, his plane was shot down. He survived but
