Constructed in 1917 as a coastal defense fortification of the U. S. Army, Fort Saulsbury was later utilized during World War II as a Prisoner of War camp, housing up to 300 German & Italian POWs who provided labor for a variety of local agricultural activities. This is an extremely scarce sign from the POW Camp at Ft. Saulsbury. Measuring 7 x 30, the sign is painted yellow with black text reading: FT. SAULSBURY P W CAMP
