I have to think this sweet hand-carved corkscrew was inspired by the somewhat iconic modern brass cat shaped corkscrew by Austrian designer Richard Rohac

which I believe dates to late 1940s or early 50s

Perhaps he was once an acrobat, or a shadow puppet, as there are two small holes in one of its paws, the other one slightly chipped which gives it a claw like feel.
